Bereaved families comforted after horrifying taxi accident

After a horrific accident, where six lives were lost in Matilu Village, the Sekhukhune District Municipality Executive Mayor will visit the families of the deceased.

Sekhukhune District Municipality Executive Mayor Minah Bahula yesterday (March 3) visited the bereaved families after their loved ones perished following an accident in Matilu Village within Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality in the afternoon of March 30.

Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said preliminary reports indicate that a minibus taxi with 13 passengers on board overturned, resulting in the loss of five lives at the scene and nine people suffering further injuries.

All the injured were transported to Matlala Hospital in Tsimanyane Village, where a sixth victim succumbed to injuries.

Chuene added that the reports also indicated that a mechanical fault might be the cause of the accident on the D4285 road.

Bahula extended condolences to the affected families and wished them strength during this painful period. Her visit aims to offer support and solidarity to the families of the deceased.

The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, has since expressed dismay over the loss of lives.

“As we approach the Easter weekend, I urge road users to be more cautious. On behalf of the department and the people of Limpopo, I wish to convey our sincere condolences to the families and next of kin. We also wish the injured a speedy recovery,” said Mathye.

Chuene indicated that an update will be provided after the finalisation of the investigation.
