My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic inspires all kinds of art – mashup videos, reams of fanfiction, etc. – but Sucklord's latest piece not only brings in a Prometheus influence, it also suggests the ponies have otherworldly origins.

The New York artist's piece – titled Star Bronies – imagines that ponies from the current incarnation of MLP find ruins of their predecessors' civilization while on a journey through space, much like the storyline in Ridley Scott's sci-fi thriller from earlier this year.

"It's a diorama depicting two space-traveling modern ponies discovering an ancient pony ruin on an exotic world," Sucklord said in a statement. "I was going for a mix of Planet of the Apes plus Lost, meets Prometheus where the new Friendship Is Magic ponies discover a Stone Age relic of the original style of pony. This suggests they have encountered evidence of their prehistoric extraterrestrial origins."

Star Bronies is just one of 25 pieces made for My Little Pony Project 2012. The event, which begins Saturday in New York and comes on the heels of a similar event this spring in Los Angeles, combines an art exhibit, pop-up shop and other happenings (come for the opening ceremony, stay for "Every Pony Fun Day"). Each artist that contributed to the art exhibit made an 18-inch vinyl figure for sale during the weekend, with 10 percent of the sales being donated to the children's charity Give Kids the World Village.
