A flat tax would lower the net income of low income Americans and raise the net income of high income Americans. That is why it is not fair. There is already too much inequality in this country.

My point is that your definition of "equity" is arbitrary. You could just as well say that everyone should pay $10,000 in taxes and call THAT equitable. Any tax system is going to viewed by someone as discriminatory against them. I already posted Adam Smith's rationale for a progressive tax structure, and I believe it to be equitable. I would, however, tax capital gains and dividends as regular income, and I would eliminate lots of loopholes the wealthy use to avoid paying what I consider their fair share.

 

Did you ever notice that flat tax advocates ALWAYS assume that they would be paying less under a flat tax system than they do now?

 

That is as grotesque as the delusions many Americans have that hard work will make them rich. In one of his columns Richard Reeves wrote of, "the adult drudgery that is the quiet end of so many American dreams."

 

It is fair if i pay the same rate of my money to taxes as you or as anyone else. if i think I'm not making enough money after taxes, then i should go do something to be able to make more, i.e. get a second job or get higher education. Forcing someone to pay a higher rate of taxes just because they went out and made something of themselves. your logic is flawed.

Working smart, while working hard MAY make you rich. Those who apply themselves to drudgery at a 40 hour week, year in and year out, will most likely be dead before they are able to retire. And even if they are not dead, they will not be alive, too old, too broken to enjoy their existence.

People need to work for themselves, even if they're employed by others. Never let another person become your priority, never let yourself become an option.

 

everyones idea of bein rich is different. but most people, if they tried, could eventually make 250k a year. if they have an idea for a service or product that everyone wants or needs, then they can be wealthy. all that your doing DistantLover is reenforcing the idea of class warfare. all your saying is that rich people need to be punished. and since i cant do it, the government needs to.

 

You're imposing your values on people who don't share them. Not everyone wants to be rich. They want to have a decent job at a decent wage with a decent retirement, and have enough money and time to enjoy their lives, their homes, and their families. If there's any "class warfare" going on, it's warfare being waged by the wealthy against that quintessentially American dream.

 

Employers often ask for, "good writing and verbal skills." You would not impress one of them.

Without rare and valuable talents hard work leads to exhaustion. Americans should learn from the French and pass laws that guarantee short work weeks and long vacations. :idea:

yeah and the french are doing so much better then us. lest see 10% unemployment, -2% in there GDP, 8% rise in their defecite. But what are they doing? passing tax cuts for the wealthy which buy the way are small businesses. So the French are at least doing something to fix their economy.
